Ribbon Cutting to Celebrate Foster Winter Drive Restoration and Greenfield Road Beautification

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The City of Southfield, in partnership with the City of Oak Park, will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate two major infrastructure and beautification projects: the restoration of Foster Winter Drive and the first phase of the Greenfield Road Beautification Initiative. The event will take place in the Greenfield Plaza parking lot, located near the intersection of 9 Mile and Greenfield Road.

The celebration will feature a complimentary lunch provided by the Eggroll Diva Food Truck, courtesy of the Southfield Downtown Development Authority (DDA). Meal vouchers will be distributed at the event while supplies last.

Foster Winter Drive Restoration

Completed in summer 2024, the Foster Winter Drive Restoration Project involved the full reconstruction of the roadway between 9 Mile Road and Greenfield Road. Located between Surgeon’s Choice Hospital and Greenfield Plaza, the road was resurfaced to eliminate potholes and improve drivability. A new pedestrian crossing was also installed to enhance walkability and provide a safer connection between the two commercial destinations.

Greenfield Road Beautification Project

The Greenfield Road Beautification Project is a collaboration between the cities of Southfield and Oak Park—communities that border the corridor. Greenfield Road experiences an Average Annual Daily Traffic Count (AADT) of 33,731 and serves as a critical regional connector between Southfield, Oak Park, and Detroit.

The first phase of the beautification project includes:

• Custom gateway monument signs located just south of Nine Mile and near Northland Drive

• Decorative streetlight banners, installed on every third pole, representing both communities

• Future banner sponsorship opportunities for businesses and local partners

• A public art lighting installation, planned for later this year, under the 8 Mile Road bridge

The lighting installation will feature multicolored lights illuminating the bridge pilons and include signage welcoming travelers to Southfield heading north and Detroit heading south. This portion of the project is being funded in part by a Patronicity crowdfunding campaign supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), and the cities of Southfield, Oak Park, and Detroit.

“I’m excited to see the first phase of beautification and placemaking completed for the Greenfield Gateway project in cooperation with the City of Oak Park to complement the redevelopment of the Northland City Centre mixed-use development,” said Terry Croad, AICP, ASLA, Director of Planning for the City of Southfield.
